What is SMP?
Scalp Micropigmentation, also known as SMP is a non-invasive treatment designed for both men and women with different skin and scalp types. They may suffer from signs of hair loss including alopecia, trichotillomania, thinning hair, hair transplants such as FUE and FUT, pattern baldness and receding hairlines. SMP can also benefit clients who may want to cover scar tissue from accidents and or operations.
Often referred to as ‘hair tattooing’ Scalp Micropigmentation gives the illusion of a fuller, thicker head of hair without the need for wigs, toupees or hair transplants.
SMP is a safe non-surgical treatment with similar techniques used for tattooing. A micro sized needle is used to replicate the image of hair follicles using dot work with pigment to match the natural hair colour. Any baldness will be camouflaged by the treatment, guaranteed to give the illusion of a ‘buzz cut’ and to simulate hairlines Rejuvenating your appearance.
All clients will be offered a free consultation to discuss what they wish to achieve from the treatment e.g. ‘the shaved look’ or to camouflage thinning hair.
If you are thinking of the ‘shaved look’ in the upcoming week prior to your appointment, we recommend that you should keep your scalp moisturised and shave your hair with clippers or a foil razor to allow the air access to your scalp. On the day of your treatment you should wash your hair to remove any product and where possible shave your head. Alternatively, we can shave your head for you, this will be discussed in your free consultation.
If you are having the treatment to correct the density of your scalp to make your hair look fuller and thicker, we require you to wash your hair on the day of the treatment to remove any product build up. By washing your hair, we can match the pigment to the tone of your hair colour correctly.

As stated we at ScalPerfection want to deliver SMP treatment to a high standard as our clients deserve the best. A total of three sessions, over a period of one month is required for the detail of the treatment to have the desired effect. The second treatment is 10 days after your first treatment and the 3rd is three weeks after your second treatment. A session can vary between 2 – 6 hours depending on the client and the end result they are wanting to achieve. After each session the pigment will be noticeably darker. Please note, as the treatment heals the pigment will gradually become lighter to mimic the hair follicle and natural hair tone. During the treatment, redness may appear on the scalp for a few hours and up to a few days post treatment. This all depends on the individual.
Immediate results can be seen straight away with the treatment, rejuvenating your appearance with you leaving full of confidence and an improved self-esteem!
After care is important in any clinical procedure and SMP is no different.
For four days after the treatment you should:
• Avoid any excessive sweating and showering your head
• Avoid shaving and touching your scalp
• Avoid moisturising your scalp (where possible)
• Avoid exposing your scalp to direct sunlight
After these four days, your scalp has started to heal. You will be able to shower and use moisturiser on your scalp to prevent it becoming dry.
For up to 30 days after your third and final session you should:
• Avoid swimming, saunas or steam rooms
• Avoid exposing your scalp to long periods in direct sun light
Three weeks after your final session have passed, your scalp will be fully healed from your treatment. All normal daily tasks can now be completed. However, we recommend that you use SPF to protect your skin when exposing it to sunlight.

Pain relief and medications
All clients are different, some clients can experience slight discomfort during the treatment whereas others may not. Pain relief can be taken prior to the treatment, such as Paracetamol, Co-Codamol and or Ibuprofen, we recommend this is considered prior to commencement. Where possible please refrain from using aspirin as this is used as a blood thinner and may cause bleeding. If you take aspirin due to a medical condition, please inform us and consult your GP for advice.
At Scalperfection we also understand alopecia can affect your facial hair as well as your scalp. This is why we also offer an effective treatment for conditions such as Alopecia Barbae and Alopecia Areata which causes bald spots within your facial hair. This treatment will replicate hair stubbles leaving you full of confidence.
